The poem on this sign is from The Black Book of Carmarthen/Llyfr Du Caerfyrddin) and is thought to be the earliest surviving  manuscript written entirely or substantially in Welsh.Written  around 1250, the book's name comes from its association with the Priory of St. John the Evangelist and Teulyddog at Carmarthen and is referred to as black due to the colour of its binding. The Market dates back to Roman Times. As long as there has been a Town here, people have met to trade. The first recorded Charter was granted by Henry the second in 1180. This was the right to hold Fairs and Markets in the Town. The Charter was renewed by successive Monarchs.

This is the best place in which to see a collection of crafts under one roof and as there are also Home Produce Stalls, Antiques, Cafes, Barbers, Engraver and all sorts of other goods on display, it is little wonder that the Provision Market is well known throughout the whole of South Wales.
